What the AEWV Allows You to Do

The visa allows you to:
  • Work in New Zealand for the employer specified on your visa.
  • Work in the job and location specified on your visa.
  • Work at least 30 hours per week.
  • Study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period, or undertake study required as part of your employment.
  • Stay in New Zealand for up to 5 years in most cases, depending on your occupation, skill level, pay and application circumstances.
You generally cannot work a second job while holding an AEWV.
If you want to change your employer, job or location, you may need to apply for a Job Change, variation of conditions, or a new visa.

Family

You cannot include your partner or dependent children in your AEWV application. However, depending on your job and income, you may be able to support separate applications for:
  • A visitor visa for your partner.
  • A work visa for your partner.
  • Visitor visas for your children.
  • Student visas for your children.

How Long Can You Stay?

Your maximum continuous stay depends on:
  • When you applied for your first AEWV.
  • Your job’s ANZSCO or NOL skill level.
  • How much you are paid.
For most jobs, the maximum continuous stay can be 5 years. For some ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 jobs, it can be 3 years.
After reaching your maximum continuous stay, you normally need to leave New Zealand for the required period — generally 12 consecutive months — before becoming eligible for another AEWV.

Important Employer Protection

New Zealand employers or agents cannot charge migrant workers fees for a job or make them pay the employer’s recruitment costs.
You should also be careful about job-offer scams. Immigration New Zealand can decline an AEWV application if it considers that you or your agent offered or promised money to the employer in exchange for a job offer.

Important Note

Your AEWV is linked to the employer, job and location specified on your visa. You cannot simply change jobs or employers without first obtaining the appropriate visa change or approval. The official Immigration New Zealand page currently lists the AEWV cost as from NZD $1,540, with 80% of applications processed within 6 weeks.
