Who Can Apply?

Applicant Requirements

  • Have a child or grandchild who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
  • Be sponsored by an eligible family member.
  • Meet health and character requirements.
  • Be outside New Zealand when applying.
  • Have genuine intentions to visit.

Additional Requirements

  • Pay for your own healthcare while in New Zealand.
  • Your child or grandchild must intend to be in New Zealand during your visit.
  • Must not have received this visa within the previous 36 months.

Sponsorship Requirements

Your sponsor can be your New Zealand citizen or resident child, your grandchild, or in certain circumstances the parent of your child or grandchild. They must meet Immigration New Zealand’s sponsorship requirements.

Sponsor Must

  • Be a New Zealand citizen or resident.
  • Provide proof of identity.
  • Show evidence of the family relationship.
  • Meet sponsorship requirements.

Relationship Evidence

  • Birth certificates.
  • Adoption documents.
  • Household registration documents.
  • Other official family records.

  • Medical insurance is strongly recommended.

Character

  • Police certificates may be required.
  • Must satisfy New Zealand’s character requirements.
  • Certificates usually need to be less than 6 months old.

Gather identity, sponsorship, relationship, health and character documents.

Step 3 – Sponsor Completes Requirements

Your sponsor submits the required sponsorship documentation.

Step 4 – Submit Application

Apply online while you are outside New Zealand.

Step 5 – Immigration Assessment

Immigration New Zealand may request additional information.

Step 6 – Receive Your eVisa

If approved, your visa is issued electronically.

Restrictions

  • You must not plan to work in New Zealand on this visa, unless you work remotely for a business overseas.
  • This visa does not lead directly to residence.
  • You cannot include dependent children in your visa application — they need to apply for their own visas.
